Drexel Institute

In the closing decades of the 19th century, Philadelphia financier and philanthropist Anthony J. Drexel envisioned an institution of higher learning uniquely suited to the needs of a rapidly growing industrial society and of the young men and women seeking their place in it. In 1891, he realized his vision with the establishment of the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry.

Renovation of the The Fountain of the Seahorses

It's nice to see the that the Fountains of the Seahorses is getting a facelift. This is a replica, 1926, of the one in the Borghese Gardens in Rome, 1740. This is located at the bottom of the ramp at the back side of the Museum.

Strawberry Mansion Bridge and the Eiffel Tower

The Strawberry Mansion Bridge is a steel arch bridge across the Schuylkill River in Fairmount Park. Every time I drive by this bridge, it reminds me of the Eiffel tower because of the resembling complex steel lattice work and just as beautiful. I was convinced that there must be some commonality.

After a little research, I found out this bridge was the built in the late 1800's by Phoenix Iron Works in Phoenixville, PA, the same one that provided the steelworks for the Eiffel Tower.

Philadelphia International Flower Show 2012

Here are some images from this year's show that particularly caught my attention. The theme was Hawaii which presented for some very interesting scenes. Being a Philly native, I especially like the miniature buildings of Philadelphia.
